Before tuning/trimming the mast, it is necessary to measure the inclination of the sailboat and to compare the obtained value with the inclination of the mast. In this way, it is easy to check whether the mast is placed midships. The mast is visually inspected, what kind of curve it is in (a negative pre-bend is visible here). It is necessary to climb the mast. On this occasion, it is necessary to check the condition of the complete rigging with a focus on the standing rigging. We check the condition of the wires, cold-pressed terminals, shroud grips for the mast (clamps), spreaderss with spreaders end plugs and spreader bracket visually and manually when climbing the mast. The condition of the mast tube itself is also to be checked, whether it had any contact that caused a damage. When descending from the top of the mast, the rigging screws on the spreader are loosen so that the intermediate shrouds have no tension, allowing proper trimming of the mast starting from the cap shrouds and lower shrouds.Preparing the mast trimming (removal of protection and splints), lubrication of the rigging screws.By loosening, lubrication and tightening up of the rigging screws the mast will be adjusted midships, the required curve will be set, the shrouds tension will be reset on its factory settings (by tensiometer), depending on the mast type, spreader angles, deck grips etc. After the adjustment rigging screws of cap shrouds, rigging screws from intermediate shrouds also has to be adjust (with a help by tensiometer). When trimming the mast, we also check the backstay tensioner, which we lubricate on that occasion. It is best to loosen in the trimm itself, and afterwards, by measuring the tension and visual inspection of the mast curve, set the mark of maximum tension, which helps a lot in sailing. These works have been carried out in the marina Kornati in Biograd in February 2023 on the sailing yacht Bavaria ¨ALLEGRA¨ for the customer ¨Tija Yacht Service¨At the end of the performed works, we also issue a certificate of completed mast tuning/trimming.The sticker with the information with the date of mast trim and mast trimm certificate number will be put on the right mast side. In case of any comment/complaint please inform us about the certificate number of the sticker to make the access to our records easier. Our tensiometers which we use for the tuning/trimming of your mast.
Conclusion
You know the books, when we were young, about the sailors from those days of sailing ships who believed that evil ghosts are hiding in the rigg appearing at strong winds by whistling or howling…..
Well, we actually drive out these evil spirits from your rigging and replace them with good fairies 😊 (on the photo beautiful Sara)
WORK SPECIFICATION
Properly tuned/trimmed masts reduce the effort/engagement of the sailboat and its crew, increase the helmsman's/sailor’s potential, and the navigation is more secure in difficult situations. At the same time, the value of the sailboat itself rises, and the damages on sails and rigging are rare.
Mast tuning/trimming includes:
Inspection of all shrouds , forestay and backstay basis
Slacken/Loosen all shrouds and backstays, visual check of terminals, wires, clamps, spreaders, all roller segments and mast as well
Control and tightening, if needed, of the deck shrouds attachments
Lubrication of tensioners, the upper and lower furler bearings (if possible)
Inspection of the mast condition and rigging
Installation of mast midships
Tuning up/adjustment of all shrouds and backstays on factory settings (depending on the boat and mast type), by tensiometer
Spraying of the mast block (with teflon spray)
Marking the maximum at sliding backstays
mast tuning certificate is to be issued (all essential mast settings will be presented to the client)
The owner of the sailing yacht (base manger) will be informed about the noticed defects and they will not be removed on our own initiative increasing the work costs.(Noticed defects include: damage on wires and/or terminals, cracked roller segment, faulty roll traveller, mast clamp etc.).).
If the mast has a mast winch, its inspection and service are not included in the mast trimming.
We can say that mast tuning/trimming is our most common service.
